Welcome to the Southern California Stakes Emergency Response Mesh

Building Resilient Communication for Emergency Preparedness

We have a domain!

You can now reach this site by going to SoCalStakesMesh.net

The old URL still works but the domain is easier to remember and pass along. You don't have to type the funky capitalization, that's just to make the words stand out.

We are developing a local emergency communication network using LoRa (Long Range) technology. LoRa allows small, low-power radios to relay text messages across a network of devices, even when cell service or the Internet is unavailable. The equipment is inexpensive and requires no license to operate.

We are using a LoRa implementation called Meshcore, which employs affordable devices called companions that connect to smartphones via Bluetooth. Through the Meshcore app, users can send short text messages to one another, creating a reliable backup communication system for emergencies.

Across Southern California, mesh enthusiasts have already installed about 150 repeaters—devices that extend the network's reach. Messages are currently traveling from Tijuana to Ventura County and Victorville. We are adding our own repeaters to strengthen coverage and provide redundancy. These can be placed discreetly on a high indoor shelf or housed in weatherproof rooftop enclosures with solar power for greater range. By placing repeaters at members' homes and properties, we can protect them from damage or removal and ensure communication even if community repeaters fail.

The mesh is currently being developed in the San Diego East Stake, but all stakes in the region are invited to participate. With the existing network of regional repeaters and a few strategically placed member-hosted units, most stakes can achieve reliable coverage. Smaller indoor repeaters can fill in remaining gaps.

This effort helps ensure that in times of emergency, we remain connected, informed, and ready to serve.
